31 dead, seven missing in Philippines storm by Aljazeera

Flash floods and landslides triggered by Tropical Storm Jangmi have left at least 31 people dead and seven missing in the Philippines, including in areas still recovering from last year's Typhoon Haiyan, officials have said.

Jangmi, packing winds of 65 kilometres per hour and gusts of 80 kph, had dumped heavy rains on southern Mindanao Island.

Floods destroyed bridges and highways, sending thousands of residents to evacuation centres.

The storm then pushed its way through eastern and central islands, where most of the deaths occurred on Tuesday.

The government weather bureau said that as of late Tuesday afternoon, the eye of the storm was 140 kilometres southwest of central Iloilo City, moving west at 19kph towards western Palawan Island.

Mayor Stephanie Uy-Tan said 12 people died when a landslide buried two vans and six houses near a mountainside highway in eastern Catbalogan City.

She said voices could still be heard from one of the vans and that rescue efforts were ongoing.

Olive Luces, a regional civil defence official, said 11 members of a family died after a creek-side house where they had gathered was washed away by flash floods in central Cebu province.

Six other people were missing in the same town.

In eastern Leyte province's Tanauan town, which was devastated last year by Typhoon Haiyan, army rescuers retrieved five bodies from a house buried by landslide.

A 65-year-old man died due to drowning in southern Compostela Valley province, while another resident remains missing after crossing a swollen river.

In central Bohol province, an 80-year old man drowned to death, while a 10-year-old girl died in a landslide that hit her home in southern Butuan City, officials said.

Cause of Ebola outbreak was 'a young boy playing near colony of infected bats', scientists say

Scientists said today that the cause of the deadly Ebola virus that hit West Africa this year was a 2 year old boy, known as patient zero, who played on a tree near a colony of virus-infested bats in his village in Meliandou, Guinea. He was the first person to die but before he died, he infected other family members, who then spread it to others and the virus eventually spread into other areas in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria and Senegal, before moving to the US, UK and Spain. This Ebola outbreak is by far the largest ever-recorded outbreak and it has killed about 7,800 p... more »

HIV positive Kenny Badmus says
he can still have children and
get married if he wants to Brands expert Kenny Badmus, who took to his
Facebook page on December 1st, to reveal how
he's been living successfully with HIV for the last
15 years (read story here), just revealed that he can get married and
have children if he wants to
despite being HIV positive. what he wrote below... One of the most
frequently asked questions
from hundreds of emails I received after
December 1st is : Will you be able to get
married and have a child if you are HIV
positive? [ or if you are going through some
major medical issue ]. Let me cut to the chase here and say a bold
yes. [ If I want to ]. Being Positive does not
preclude anyone from getting married or
having children – thank God for science. Research suggests that
anti-HIV therapy during
pregnancy plus planned caesarean delivery may
reduce the risk of transmission to as low as 1 in 50
women. ( AidsMap) The question is 'how many of
these women are accessing healthcare? If you want
to have a healthy child and you are HIV +, quickly get on therapy and
follow your doctor's advice. To be in love or starting to date again
should not
scare anyone. And you don't have to start looking
for HIV positive people to date. There are people
out there – though very few- who care less what
your sero status is. The best prevention you can
give your lover/spouse, if they are negative, is for you to ensure you
are on treatment. Yes. The second largest study – 052- to look at
whether
people with HIV become non-infectious if they are
on antiretroviral therapy (ART) has found no cases
where someone with a viral load under 200 copies/
ml transmitted HIV, either by anal or vaginal sex.
Although this study continues into 2017, with best practices and
eliminations of other STDs, it's
almost impossible to infect your partner with HIV
if you are adhering to your treatment. Even if you
don't use condoms. (AidsMap)
Having established the foregoings, the most
important thing for me are the psychosocial issues surrounding the
quest for marriage and having a
child. It is more of a traditional thing for most of
us in Africa to want to get married or have a child
by all means. In my opinion, I think it's a very
dogmatic way of living our lives. Why live to make
others approve of you? It's not worth it. Marriage or having children
do not guarantee our lives will
be better. As someone who had lived with these societal
expectations for many years myself, I became
healthier and emancipated the day I dropped these
societal impositions. Check this page soon to see
my journey into marriage, love, parenting and
more. I have seen people in marriages who are very happy, and I have
seen people in marriages
who are very miserable. I have seen people with
children who are very happy. Just the same way I have seen people with children
who are very lonely and miserable in their old age.
What brings happiness is living our best lives.
Marriage or being being married does not solve all
our problems if we enter into it for all the wrong
reasons. Being in love is much better. Marriage is a legalistic way of
looking at love. It allows for
claims, societal celebrations and approvals of our
mates. You don't have to be in love to get
married. The two are not mutually exclusive although they
are better when they go hand in hand. Hence, the
sham marriages around us today. But you have to
be in love to say you are in love. Love has no true
love or false love. Marriage on the other hand can
be falsified. I'd rather you pushed towards being in and finding love.
And if that love leads to
marriage, how lucky are you! Embrace it. Do it to
gain the legal benefits if you have to marry. Having a child is about
the same. If you can have
your own child biologically, embrace it, and
cherish it. Science also has made this possible. We
should look at this at other time. If you cannot, go
pour your love on other children around you.
Children are the most visible victims of undernutrition. According to
worldhunger.org, 'children who are poorly nourished suffer up to 160
days of illness each year. Poor nutrition plays a
role in at least half of the 10.9 million child
deaths each year–five million deaths.' Further statistics reveals that
undernutrition
magnifies the effect of every disease, including
measles and malaria. The estimated proportions of
deaths in which undernutrition is an underlying
cause are roughly similar for diarrhea (61%),
malaria (57%), pneumonia (52%), and measles (45%) (Black 2003, Bryce
2005). You can be a
godmother. A foster parent. An adoptive father.
The list goes on.
Ever heard of John H. Johnson and his wife Eunice
Walker Johnson? The owners of one of the biggest
media platforms in the world, Ebony magazine. This couple never had
their own biological
children. They adopted Linda Johnson-Rice, who
carried on their legacies. History has thousands of
such couples. Having a womb and a dick do not
make parenting. What makes great parenting is
our heart of love.So there you have it. Remove the limitations and the
dogmas surrounding your life,
and go have some fantastic authentic life. Love.
Travel. Eat well. Go volunteering. Give. Buy
chocolates. Go partying. Dance. Laugh. Read new
books. Write. Take pictures and #LIVE

Photo: Fire roast 4 children of
same parents to death on Xmas
day in Anambra It was a sad Christmas day celebration for the
Ofomata family residing at Umuele Umudim,
Nnewi, Anambra State as a fire outbreak at their
three-bedroom apartment roasted four of their
children- Chioma Ofomata, 6, Goodness& Mercy
Ofomata who were twins, 3, and Ifeoma, 2, to death. According to
reports, the mother of the 4 girls had
locked her children in the house and had gone over
to the community center to collect her share of
Christmas rice meant for widows in the community
when the fire started. Residents in the area were not quick to notice the
fire or hear the cry for help from the children until
they started seeing thick smoke coming from their
apartment. By the time the door to their house
was broken down, only the charred remains of the
four girls were found. Their father, 57 year old Mr Ofoamata, a
vulcanizer, said he was at his shop with his two
sons, Kosy, 8, and Ebuka, 5 when the incident
happened. He said he got to know of the
unfortunate incident when edhe returned home at
about 6pm and saw people gather at his compound with smoke coming from
his apartment. He said
his wife never told him she was going out to
collect any rice. While giving her account of what happened, mrs
Ofomata said she locked her children in their
apartment so as to restrict their movement and
that the day of the incident wasn't the first time
she would lock them in. She denied claims that the
rice she went to collect was actually meant for widows "The rice was
meant for everybody, not widows
alone. If you like go and find out. I don't know
what caused the fire," she said The remains of the little children have been
deposited at the mortuary.

Nigerian army accuses Sahara
Reporters of being Boko Haram's
media arm The Nigerian Army in a statement released on its
website yesterday December 27th accused online
media hub, Sahara Reporters of being the
propaganda media for terrorism & Boko Haram in
Nigeria. Find the military statement below... The attention of the
Nigerian Army has been
drawn to a publication on the website of
Sahara Reporters with the caption "Nigerian
Army Presents Unverified "Lt Col" To Refute
Petition Against Military Hierarchy". It is
noteworthy but sad and unfortunate that Sahara Reporters has committed itself to
support for terrorism and fighting Nigeria, its
people, its military and particularly the
Nigerian Army." Before Sahara Reporters published their purported
document described as petition from Lt Col
Wende, a serving Commanding Officer, the
Nigerian Army conducted a thorough investigation
on the document involving other security and
intelligence agencies. The process confirmed that the serving officer
was not the author of the
petition. Yesterday, the officer dissociated
himself from the so-called petition in a press
conference he personally attended. While
reputable media organizations were on hand to
engage the officer, Sahara Reporters being a faceless medium,
preferred to remain faceless and
was not represented. Sahara Reporters sadly, but
predictably, and in fulfilment of its support for
terrorism published in its website a fabrication in
which it referred to the officer as "unverified".
How absurd! Sahara Reporters has strived hard to present itself
as a propaganda medium for terrorism and Boko
Haram in particular. It is with this in mind, that
the Nigerian Army conducted a press conference in
Maiduguri in which the officer who appeared for
the press conference is Lt Col Wende, a serving officer of the
Nigerian Army. Since the officer has
clearly dissociated himself from the document, it
makes sense that the so-called petition is the
handiwork of Sahara Reporters. With time,
terrorism in Nigeria and Sahara Reporters will be
defeated by the collective will of the good people of Nigeria. OLAJIDE
LALEYE Brigadier General
Director, Army Public Relations

Jonathan's government not
responsible - Osinbajo During a parley with journalists at his
campaign office in Lagos yesterday, APC VP candidate Professor Yemi
Osinbajo criticized the current government, saying its not a
responsible one... "The problem is management of resources. If we plug
the loopholes, you'll see the resources being pooled together.
Security is the first duty of any government; you cannot fight a war
where leadership is uncertain; where leadership is not sure of itself
and its responsibilities. "The type of leadership we need to
successfully fight a war is lacking. The commander-in-chief has
responsibility for everything. You can't continue to say your enemies
did this or that. You've got to take responsibility and that is what
is lacking in the current dispensation. "The people I talked to in my
bus trips, both men and women asked, 'What are you doing about the
Chibok girls?' I was surprised that people here in Lagos could be that
concerned.
It shows everyone is concerned. My take is that as the president, you
should visit these places, talk to them and let them see that you are
doing something. And one of the things to be done is equipping the
military." "We have reached a point where we need to draw a line
because this country can't continue like this. A few days ago, we
heard that some billions were missing from the oil fund. You and I
know that all this is so because there are no consequences. What is
required is an administration where people believe that the number one
man will not tolerate corruption. That is the first step."
